Exactly one year ago yesterday Milwaukee had it's biggest flood in recent memory, closing State Fair, submerging cars on the highway and causing millions of dollars in damage throughout the area. I only lost a few paintings, a couch and a month of evenings and weekends to cleanup, but I also had a bit of a realization...
I don't mean to be overdramatic of course but realizing I had all these lifelong connections and formative moments with water, while, for the first time feeling anxiety because of it made me closely consider this inspiration that lurks behind my compulsion to create...and the small-scale canvases became the absolute perfoect place to explore and ease these tensions.
It's easy to overlook that which we rely upon.
Too often we can only hope it's still there when we finally realize its importance. The Time We Spend Looking Outside featuring work by Daniel Fleming and Fernando Rico, hosted by the Carnelian Art Gallery in Madison Wisconsin, is up through the end of August. Take a look at the gallery website HERE and check out pictures from the opening HERE. Make sure to head to the contact page to sign up for the newsletter to keep up with new art and info.

Openings, for me, have always been a little bittersweet. It's extremely rewarding to see people enjoy and experience something you put time into, but while the show is just beginning, the end of the work means its about time to move on to the next thing. This show and series mean a lot to me personally (I'll share some specifics in an upcoming post) and the last year has brought some welcome changes to my goings-on. It will be interesting to see what sticks, what trends fall away, and what the next year will bring. Tomorrow is 1 year to the day since this series technically started...so I suppose I'll embrace that coincidence and get started on the next one!
Thanks to everyone who came out Friday and made the opening an energetic and extremely enjoyable evening. I appreciate all the support and it's honestly hard to communicate how much it means to have people interested in and experience something through what I've been working on. Art can be a very isolating endeavor and, sales or not, it's inspiring to see people enjoy the work. Check out the links below for more info on the gallery, the show, more pics from the opening and my archive of work. You can also head over to the contact drop down if you'd like to sign up for my newsletter which goes out once every month or two. Carnelian Art Gallery Insight Opening Pics Archive |
